Jugaad is increasingly more accepted in Frugal innovation. Frugal is simply “doing more with less” in other words reducing the complexity of a process or removing everything but the very essential of a product. The Hindi word 'Jugaad' describes an improvised or makeshift solution using scarce resources. It's a way of life in India, where washing machines are used for whipping up yogurt drinks, but it's also an innovation theory that's proving to be increasingly influential in the marketing departments of Western corporations. In the midst of rising global competition and swelling R & D budgets, Jugaad Innovation presents ways to innovate, be flexible and do more with less. Peppered with examples of innovative entrepreneurs in emerging markets such as Africa, India, China and Brazil, Jugaad Innovation illuminates paths to engender breakthrough growth in a complex and resource-scarce world. Jugaad is a colloquial Hindi word that roughly translates as “an innovative fix for your business; an improvised solution born from ingenuity and cleverness.” Whether it is aimed at creating a product, service, or business model—is what we call jugaad innovation. For any enterprise to thrive, they must drive innovation into all aspects of their culture. This certainly includes technology and products but extends beyond to areas such as Human Resources, Marketing and day-to-day business operations. India must give a significant thrust to innovation if it aims to become the third-largest economy in the world, said the Economic Survey 2021. There has been progress in this direction, it pointed out, which is reflected in the fact that India has for the first time become a part of the top 50 countries in the Global Innovation Index rankings. Such innovations/jugaad add immense value for a very low cost. Jugaad could be the building bridge between the traditional and the modern methods of innovation. An evolutionary bridge for businesses in India which needs to be explored and strengthened. The feasibility of jugaad needs to be pondered upon. Just in case you didn’t know, Jugaad is also known as (or explained to non-Indians) as Frugal Innovation. That is, simple low-cost fixes. Please note that Jugaad is a concept and can be used in the case of a mechanical contraption as well as a political solution – just that jugaad has to be a quick fix, with little of no cost. India is the Jugaad Nation, a country that transformed the art of fending of oneself into effective innovation. A country that today, according to a NASSCOM report , represents the third largest technological startup ecosystem in the world.
